When animals began to hunt in groups and live in a herd, collectivism was born. Out of this was born a society which has now evolved to this stage.
One of the glues that bring people together is the common communication tools, enabling cooperation but more importantly allowing themselves to be in touch with all the happenings so that the personal risk is minimum.
But an individual has no incentive to work for a collective if the rewards are not sufficient enough. If the reward is not equal to the contribution of the individual in the group context, they may not be interested. This feels more like Capitalism, eh! But disparity can ultimately ruin the collective leaving individual with no group protection, thereby drastically reducing his ability to contribute. This feels like Communism, eh!
The best way forward is perhaps in taking a middle path where individual is rewarded in propotion to his/her contribution and at the same time disparity is held least and productivity rewards are shared with all the group. That sounds like Internet!
Internet as a social medium is a very important mutation in the collective psychology of humans. There is no going back on this technology, which is for all its wonders is still in its infancy. The true leverage of internet would be in increasing the number of people who can band together, the ease of communication and sharing of knowledge and insights, and feeding the outcomes back in to the system for further developments.
Wikis, blogs, tweets, networking, answers, opensource, chats, fileshares, forums, etc are all just the buds of the new economy. This great leverage, a leverage of knowledge and skill setts in exponential factors, would help in setting new trends in the way people interact with each other and 'killer' skill sets that will set people apart from each other.
Its going to be a wonderful journey into the unknown. But for sure it is going to be an exciting journey. Yup, you can make a few million or perhaps billions on the way.
