Today's rather agitated discussions on FDI in retail is perfect example of how completely divorced people can be to practical realities.
FDI in retail, the opposition of which has distinct socialistic connotations and support of which has shades of crony capitalism. No body will say that the tide of FDI and opening of economy can be reversed or stopped at the Retail's gate. However, what is surprising are the arguments put forth, majority of which tends to be on either end of the spectrum.
The simple answer is, both the ends are wrong. There has to be a middle ground. [We would have been happy not to have this mess for now had not been the hurried miscarriage by Manmohan's government]
The practical solution is to find a workable solution, IF that is possible. [Parties so close to elections would not give a damn about practicalities.] Yes, if the elections in Gujarat had been over by now, their tone would have been distinctly lower, more conciliatory and less obstructionist.
Whatever the charade, we know ultimately it is the money that is going to win the game. The suicidal farmer can't pay lakhs of rupees for TV ad slots. They don't matter nor does their poverty, suffering or any other human failings, unless of course, when needed for some selfish purpose. Every city needs a museum, a country too needs few poor people to show the developments it is making.
It doesn't matter where you are on the spectrum of agreement, what matters is that you are likely to loose. If you are On for crony capitalism, please note that you are going to loose in future. If you are On for socialistic protectionism, please note that you will continue to loose, until your capitalistic-supporting brethren take your place. Hey, its a give and take world. Don't blame my stupid, (almost drunk) rant for the mess that your 'Greatest Economist Prime Minister" is subjecting you guys too. I hope you will enjoy boiling in the oil, as much as I would enjoy exploiting it.
Come on guys, why are you batting for the under dogs. Who in this case are decidedly the poor burden on society called farmers. People say even farmers will be better off once the FDI goes through, all I would ask them is that: under what conditions do farmers prosper and what is going to be their sacrifices to get that prosperity?
Be sure of one thing, it doesn't give a damn as to who the Prime Minister or the future Prime Minister is or the lady in the treasury bench or opposition bench is... what matters, and the only thing that matters is that rich people who control the people and influencers will always have their way.
Another interesting factor to think, nah... rumor about, or whatever it should be called is: why is this farmer takeover provisions (ooops, I said it again) comes when the world comes into the realization that the best investment for next one-two decades is --- the farm land!! Big hugs to you, if you guess it right! Love you.
Now, why the hell are people selling out our country with no provisions of safety or society of Indians. Incredible apathy.
Hey, I digress into the socialistic path.. back up.
The way these processes are implemented are so wrong that it stinks. Stinks really bad. Could this have been handled better by Congress / UPA in such a way that it was presented as beneficial and actually help it work for the party's election prospects. Yes, it is very much conceivable. However, the rumps in the Congress seem to have been in hurry for 'God Only Knows' reasons. Anyway they will bear the burden.
Ok... gotta go, time for dinner. C ya.
