Dogs!!

Dogs are God's greatest creation. I don't know why God wasted so much time creating other things, when a dog is all He would have wanted. Maybe, He justed to see how how much He loved dogs, so He created lots of other things. Love the dogs and the boats in these pics. Hope will have plenty of both some day :)

New technologies & naughty-cute kids

Talking of new technologies and inventions, here is one good take at it from Nature magazine. PALO ALTO, CALIFORNIA — A seismologist at Stanford University in California has developed a computer program for tracking earthquakes in real time. It uses thousands of volunteers' computers and may someday be fast enough to issue warnings just before an earthquake strikes. uake-Catcher Network, as it's called, uses the accelerometers built into many new computers, which sense when a computer is dropped so that the hard drive can be shut down. But seismologist Jesse Lawrence found that the sensors could also pick up on more subtle movement. Thus was born the latest iteration in distributed computing, which turns the unused computing power of thousands of home computers into a giant supercomputer. ---------- Here is another stunning nano picture -- Graphite! --- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Persistence

One of the best quote I have heard on Persistence: Persistence isn't using the same tactics over and over. That's just annoying. Persistence is having the same goal over and over. - Seth Godin

Common errors and bad habits of retail investors

Retail investors are most vilified set of investors. The general assumption is that they are the ‘greater fools’ as in the theory by that same name. Very unfortunately, to an extent the sobriquet is deserved. In Indian mythology it is said that Gods get their power from the devotion of multitude. Similarly, retail investors, call them by whatever name, are the power bearers for the power-brokers. They are the ones holding the visionary torch when power brokers have safely made their way home. Retail investors are usually the loosing side of the trade. There are some very common errors that they end up doing. I just tried to list out some common errors or bad habits that we retail investors tend to repeat. Buy knowledge: Home-works are for kids Most of the retail investors do not do homework on which their trades and investments are based. They expect brokers to do the work for them; after all the investors/traders are paying the broker for the research in form of commission/retainers. ...

Pessimism of US dollar

I have been trying to write a report on the USD. But, GOD.... I am overwhelmed by the negative news flows on dollar. Every Tom, Dick and Harry seems to be bearish on dollar. Every newspaper, every story, every columnist, every blog, every trader. I have spent most part of weekend looking for a "contrarian" view on dollar, but those just doesn’t seem to exist. I agree there is too much happening on dollar, to relax on the trigger just now. But is this too much? I have been a gold-bug for a long time. $1000 is a crowning glory but come on... dollar is not going to die. If it dies like this, in one swoop, it will be financial Armageddon! **** Just trying to check what is the sentiment. Tried to check out the trends of google searches: It should be noted that these search strings are not accurate. For example, if we look for “gold”, it will count the articles related to Gold cup, Olympic gold etc. Similarly, for Dollar, any articles that discuss the price of lipstick in dollar ...

Death of Equities - Business Week cover

I was thinking the death of dollar story is overdone. Looking to research the 'cover stories' I found there were so many on the web, it doesnt make any sense to add to the clutter. So here goes an interesting cover. Falkor

Megastructures of Finance

From a caveman to mega-structures, humans have progressed rapidly. The innovation and creative abilities of human have known no bounds. Humans have successfully found a way to vent their creative abilities in many ways and forms. Creativeness abounds in all aspects of human activity. From engineering to chemistry, from biology to space sciences, we see the remarkable achievement of human ingenuity. In esoteric sciences, Man is represented as the most defiled. It just means that man is imperfect. And we have a story of Adam, Eve and serpent to coax us to believe that detail. It is also said that all the creations arising from the imperfect would be imperfect. Now, combine the creative skill of human with the imperfection of his creations, you have - trouble. Call it patriotism or war, humans have always found an ingenious way of killing people From the hand to hand combat to development of smart tools man has developed. Weapons are the tools developed for killing. Unfo...

Thoughts on systems

Stock markets are in a volatile phase. One of the real dangers in the volatile times like this is, all the systems will take some time to adjust to this. But most of the systems will fail repeatedly. One mistake that even a experienced person can make is to abandon the system or try and tweak. Once the volatility reduces and the markets regain their former trend the systems will work fine. But if there are tweaks in the system designed to work in volatile markets, these systems would not be able to correctly signal the start of the trend.

Angels in dust - Conquest of death

Part A Hindu mythology has an interesting tale of resurrection. All civilizations have stories of resurrection. But some stories stand apart. In Hindu mythology one story that stands apart is the story related to Maha Mruthunjaya Mantra. It is out of scope here to tell you this story. But what makes this legend so special is that God hands down a great sage Sukracharya, a mantra (invocation), whereby he can bring the dead people back to life. This is the total power over death and only such instance (in stories) that I have come across. Ability to regenerate is very precious. The legitimacy of such stories is always on the fringes of imagination. You wish it really worked the way it did in stories but you don’t see that happen in real life. In real life you see death, loss of loved ones, if only we had this kind of magic. I always wondered why doctors don’t look into this kind of research. "Nothing comes until the time comes." It remained an interesting story ...
