First, make a list of all the people you know and ask them to get in touch with you online. And thats going to revolutionize your network?!
Seems darn silly, isn't? But incredibly, this is how Linkedin works best. Or for that matter any social networking site. By helping you be in touch with colleagues and friends, who may otherwise be out of touch. The second important way, is by discovering that your friend has a friend who is exactly what you have been looking for. The second degree networking is what works best, when you want to get going.
One interesting thing is, people show off that they have 100s of connections. But are they able to justify and 'respect' all their 'networks'. Most often not. There are very few people who will take time, to be in touch with all and making most of networking.
Linkedin stats say, CEOs have average of 27 connections or so (if I remember right). Why would somebody with just 27 connections be a CEO and someone with 100s, not? It is probably because these connections are high-impact connections, meaning the person know the qualities and can rely on those qualities/expertise.
Go for high-impact connections and not the blind connections. And if you meet an interesting person online, make sure you commit to build a relationship with that person. And not just another one for the scoreboard.
There are many ways to use Linkedin:
Here is a smart way
Here is 10 ways
Here is 20 ways
Here is 100+ ways
I dont know which way is better until somebody comes up with one more list, I will go by what granpa used to tell me: If you want a friend, be a friend.
