The Mirage of Corruption Free Government

Have you stopped to consider why is the corrupt political parties are so successful?

Contrary to what many may argue, the real cause of their success is the so called aam-admi. The reason is not the vote-buying, influencing or booth-capturing of old days, it is much more poignant. The real reasons for the millions for poor and middle class, subtly but surely backing the corrupt parties is because these corrupt parties are the biggest source of immediate gratification.

A truly well-intentioned party (I can only think of CPI) can never succeed in India because they can never in their right conscience give the gratification that these (aam janta) require. On the contrary, every one of their schemes and proposals are like bitter pills which these population are scared of and hence, will never vote them into power. These dumb population will forever vote the parties into power because of the immediate and subsequent - VISIBLE - gratification that these corrupt parties propose. Ultimately, the bills have to be borne by the aam-admi, and when the time to pay the bills arise, they collectively rise alarm over the "inhuman" "oppressive" "care-less" governments.

Once the charm of these usual doses of gratification has ended, a new series of gratifications begin. It is always so, how can it not be?! Now that the easy money of the low fuel prices, unlimited LPG subsidies, unlimited free electricity, and name-your-price MSPs are over, we have a new scheme of seducing the aam-admi. One of the favorite is the obscene scheme of black money. It is somehow drilled into the heads of the aam-admi that there are billions, if not trillions, tucked away in Swiss banks which if brought back to India can revolutionize India. Its people will get many more years of low fuel, low electricity, free education and a happy life. The costs of these and that and some more all will be down.

People who think the money will come back from Swiss banks are, to be very polite - ludicrous idiots. To explain it the other way, all the corrupt guys who are still holding the "cash" at Swiss banks, don't deserve a cent back. People who talk that money will be brought back are just playing the card to gather votes. They, even if best intentioned will never be able to succeed in an endeavor they know themselves in the deepest corner of their hearts is just impossible to accomplish.

The money - never - stays - still. The money would be invested in hundreds of opportunities across the world. It will be utilized and even brought back to India as an FDI or FII investments.  Effectively, the money has disappeared  THAT is what money laundering is all about! Swiss banks are just a gateway to launder money. Once the money enters the 'legal' channels, there is no requirement to hold those accounts anymore.

I could go on and on the pathetic blindfolds these politicians are laying out on the aam-admi. Lets take one example, there is no way - no way - one can implicate anybody with Swiss bank accounts. There are years, if not decades of legislative battles to be fought before a single person can be convicted. And most often, you can be sure it will take years or decades - if at all - to finally discover who the real owner of those trusts, companies and LLCs are. The legislative battles are enormous, embattled and lengthy.

But all such practicalities are not to be bothered according to aam-admi. They will vote for anybody who says they will bring the black money back into India. In other words, all they care about is the money to be used for the general welfare of the society (read, themselves)

You can't do much for population which escapes one hook and promptly bites another. What they should instead be doing, if they have the maturity to do so, is to give the real parties with real policies a good shot at government. More bitter the medicines these parties offer, better it is for our country and future.

If we postpone the restructuring that India badly needs, all the problems are just hidden in a closet. And one day for sure - as sure as sunrise tomorrow - they will all come back to bite us. The bills and the costs have to be borne and paid. There are no free lunches. Sooner aam-admi understands this, better it is for everyone.

So, if you see the same old corrupt parties come to power you know very well who to blame. After all every government -- good or bad or corrupt -- is by the people, for the people and is of the people!

PS: Of course, there will be some quick successes. Not all laundering operations are well planned or properly executed. If you look at the case of Robert Vadra or others like Rajasthan Royals etc it is laughable how the deals have been structured  They have bread crumbs all over; they must be punished, not for being corrupt but being extremely dumb as well.

Cognitive rules of business presentations

In his recent book, Clear and to the Point, Kosslyn explained that the four rules of PowerPoint are: The Goldilocks Rule, The Rudolph Rule, The Rule of Four, and the Birds of a Feather Rule. Here's how they work. The Goldilocks Rule refers to presenting the "just right" amount of data. Never include more information than your audience needs in a visual image. As an example, Kosslyn showed two graphs of real estate prices over time. One included ten different numbers, one for each year. The other included two numbers: a peak price, and the current price. For the purposes of a presentation about today's prices relative to peak price, those numbers were the only ones necessary. The Rudolph Rule refers to simple ways you can make information stand out and guide your audience to important details -- the way Rudolph the reindeer's red nose stood out from the other reindeers' and led them. If you're presenting a piece of relevant data in a list, why not mak...

Monetary inflation, Spiritual devaluation

Its been sometime I have been trying to make some special people understand the evils of inflation. Inflation is an abstract subject most of us dont know about, let alone understand the technicalities amidst jargons. I have in my previous post have briefly touched the social part of inflation but never in a concentrated way. I understand what my friends mean when they say "tell me in layman’s language." It is not a heartening sign, that they avoid technicalities. But it could well be that knowing where they stand, their role and understanding the social changes in the light of inflation may motivate them to understand the term "inflation." This is just to highlight the brief points. First and the foremost, is there any link between inflation numbers and society. Yes. The relation is same as the relation between society and money. What is money? Money is an easy means of exchange. If I am selling my horses to a pig-farmer and I am not interested in taking pigs in ret...

Unprecedented External Demand Shock Underway

India’s export growth averaged 24.8% over the last three years, driven by strong global growth. However, over the last three months, export growth has decelerated sharply. While until recently the strong demand from emerging markets including Latin America, Emerging Europe, the Middle East and Africa ensured that export growth remained healthy, over the last three months disruptions in the macro environment of these economies have been evident. Apart from weakening demand, exports have also been affected by the lack of availability of foreign trade credit and inventory liquidation. India’s exports declined by 12.1%Y in October 2008 compared with 10.4% in September and 26.9% in August. While we expect some improvement in the second half of 2009, exports are likely to be unusually weak over the next six months. We now expect exports to decline by 5.3%Y in 2009 compared with 12.7% in 2008 (estimated) and 23.1% in 2007 Excerpt source
